SHANGHAI - Yoav Shamir’s “Checkpoint” has won the Magnolia Award for Best Documentary in the Humanities at the 11th annual Shanghai Television Festival.

The film competed against 26 others in the festival, known as the “Cannes Festival” of the Far East.

“Checkpoint” was aired on Shanghai’s public television station, which reaches millions of people.

The award is the 14th major prize nabbed by the film, which has participated in more than 60 film festivals worldwide.

“Checkpoint” depicts the daily routine at IDF checkpoints in Ramallah, Jenin, and Nablus, which are in place to regulate the travel of Palestinians in a bid to combat terrorism.

The documentary, which exposes dilemmas on both the Israeli and Palestinian side, uses no narration, and the soldiers and Palestinians at the checkpoints are never identified. The subtitles simply tell the audience where the checkpoint being videotaped is located.
