TEL AVIV – Facing justice: A 16-year-old boy has been charged with murder, rape, and sodomy over the brutal killing of a 15-year-old girl that shocked the country.
The teenager, who cannot be named, was indicted at the Tel Aviv District Court Thursday morning over the murder of Ma’ayan Sapir, strangled to death in the town of Rehovot, south of Tel Aviv.
Speaking at the court, Ma’ayan’s mother Sarah said no punishment would be sufficient, and added the horrifying killing was not only her problem.
“There are many ticking bombs out there. Today it’s me, tomorrow it’s you,” she said. “What right does he have to breath? He was her judge and he sentenced her to death. He deserves the death penelty. He didn’t even flinch.”
Suspect dragged girl to nearby school
The mother also slammed the State for the lax attitude that allowed the suspected killer, who was staying at a juvenile institute, to go on vacation, during which he murdered Sapir.
“This is the devil incarnate and our country helped him become the devil,” she said. “There are many murder cases but Ma’ayan’s murder crossed all the lines.”
Ma’ayan Sapir was murdered after taking a shortcut through a park on her way to the mall. The murder suspect bumped into her, assaulted her, and dragged her to a nearby school, where he sexually assaulted her.
Subsequently, the teenager strangled the girl. At one point, a passerby approached the suspect, who told him Sapir was drunk and he was “taking care” of her.
