Two Israeli duos won silver medals Tuesday in the European sailing championship in 470 model sailboats, which was held in Poland.
The men’s team of Udi Gal and Gidi Kliger and the women’s team of Nika Kornitzky and Vered Buskila came in second after the competition’s final day of sailing was called off due to insufficient winds.
Israel Yachting Association Head Yehuda Maayan told Ynet following the championship, “Of course there is a sense of minor disappointment because both teams were very close to getting first place, and if the last round of sailing would have taken place they could have won the gold; but in any case it is a great accomplishment and we have something to be proud of.”
The silver medals offered the Israeli sailing teams certain redemption, as they failed to capture one of the top three spots in the 2004 Athens Olympics.
Buskila and Kornitzky considered ending their partnership following their Olympic disappointment, but ultimately decided to stay together.
