Increased punishment is the only way to battle the recent wave of violence in Israel, Shephelah (coastal plain) Sub-District Police Chief Yarden Klandarov told Ynet. “Only punishment, punishment and more punishment. A minor who commits a serious crime should be removed from society,” he said. “You cannot look solely at the minor’s rehabilitation. You must also look at the victim.” Recently no less than five murders have occurred within the sub-district’s jurisdiction, placing immense pressure on the unit’s investigators to crack the cases. “It is clear Israeli society has become more violent,” Klandarov said. “The Maayan Sapir case is one I will never forget. It was like finding a Barbie doll in hell.” Investigator Ronen Elazar said, “Seemingly there is no connection between the cases, but you can see the violence rampant in our society.” Apparently, the Israeli public had not grasped the dimensions of the recent wave of violence until the murder of 17-year-old Fuad Malikov outside a Tel Aviv area nightclub, which was followed by five additional murders within an eight-day period. When asked whether the police treats murder cases differently, Klandarov said, “In each case we work with the intent of filing an indictment, but when a criminal is murdered, you tell yourself that he chose this way of life.” “However, you owe it to his family and to society in general that those involved (in the murder) would be tried,” he said.” When it is a child, the situation is completely different. You cannot get used to child murder cases.”
